Don't mess with me, I'm now alwayse armed

Hey everyone, I just made a major milestone in karate. I am now a black belt in Sanchin-Ryu. I have been studying Sanchin-Ryu for 11 years strait. I took a more or less break now that I'm in college because there are no classes within walking distance or near a bus stop, but I started when I was 7 and now I'm 18 and my birthday was in the summer when I still studied regularly. I sent a mass text to all my friends basically saying "you can't mess with me anymore. I'm now a black belt."

Lets start with where it all started. I was actually in this style called "kindergarten karate" and it was held at my brother's pre-school. It was for ages 4-6, so I quickly aged out. I really liked karate but I couldn't stay, and I think it ended soon after I aged out. The highest rank we got was white, which in all styles is the lowest, and at least in Sanchin-Ryu is walk-in rank. We got white belts, and that was all we could get.

Now I am a karate kid and I have no where to learn. My mom found a style called Sanchin-Ryu, offered through community ed, and much cheaper than all the other styles offered in our neighborhood. I was signed up, went to classes, and loved it. I had a very animated sensei (teacher in English), and he is the reason I stayed involved. "Lets learn some basics, learn some stories about Sanchin-Ryu, learn how to avoid dangerous situations, and then run around to the dojo." I know all the history about Sanchin-Ryu and the ideology, and that we are an American born style that isn't hundreds of years old. Mom also probably liked that because I was wore out at the end of every class. That were some good times. I went through all the cue ranks with him (white, orange, green, and purple). I also got to see him advance a rank, becoming a master. Unfortunately he had to move, but that was fine. In total I had 4 sensei's. All of them had their own unique styles, and I have to give props to my last sensei for working with me so much to get me past purple. But lets rewind back to when I was 9.

I've been going to the annual retreat that we hold at a hotel central state every year since I was 9. We used to go to this relay fun, family friendly Holiday Inn, with a really big pool, great game room, kids eat free restaurant, mini-golf course, and big space for us to work out in. The hotel was major fun when we weren't working out. I think we had a larger turn out when we went there. Definitely more kids. My brother used to come with us even though he didn't study karate. He came for the Holiday Inn fun. It was fun to see everyone that studies Sanchin-Ryu, all gathered in 1 place. Not just that, but seeing Chief Grand Master himself, the guy who started Sanchin-Ryu. I don't remember all that I learned, but it was fun.

Now fast forward some years; my belt is to small on me, I've had 4 different senseis, and I start taking my karate more seriously. I go to this super camp retreat thing for kids in Sanchin-Ryu, a week of working out, almost non-stop. I was not used to that level of activity. But after 4 days, and many near push-ups, and puking up a non-digested breakfast, I was promoted to 3rd degree brown. More on super camp, that was the 1 time I was ever able to do a push-up. After many attempts at trying to do push-ups, like 100 throughout they day, I remember being able to do a push-up corectly for the first time in my life. I also remember on the ride home, by brother decided to be annoying, and at that time in history, he liked poking me over and over again saying in the most annoying voice "who's a happy boy?" Since I worked on Sanchin-Ryu so much that week, and was so prepared for whatever confrontation came my way, I instinctively yelled "NOT ME!" and threw an elbow back at him landing right in the solar plex; the place where you get the wind knocked out of you. He never did that to me again. We're not supposed to use karate on our siblings, we teach that to the kids, but it was instinct.

On the subject of accidental usage of karate when it wasnt' necessary, I remember this one time when a friend of mine was demonstrating this thing he saw in a video game, where he was running back and forth, hitting at all angles, saying "you can't see where I'm coming from, you can't land an attack." Told him to stop, he didn't stop. My teachings kick in, fight or flight mode. Nature said fight. I gave him a mule kick, heel palm, and then when I realized what happened, gave him a little smack on the head. He never "demonstrated" anything on me ever again, and it's a good thing I wasn't to advanced when this happened. I was at the level where all I knew was where to land strikes but not super effectively. I can't fathom what kind of damage I might have done had I been a higher skill level. It was enough to make him stop, and he was hurting me some so it was defencive in a physical sense.

Second and first degree brown don't have as interesting of stories connected. It was quite a long run, like 4 years to second degree and 3 years to first degree. My math is probably a bit wrong, but those dates aren't imprinted in my memory. All I remember is that my belts started to not fit by the time I advanced.

Getting brown belts aren't easy, they need to be awarded by a master, and since my sensei at my home class wasn't a master, I typically got promoted at events. Black on the other hand, much harder. A master has to recommend you, and then Chief Grand Master, along with the chief instructors I think, have to evaluate you to give you an application. With that application comes an essay on what Sanchin-Ryu means to you, how have your seneis influenced your learning and concept of Sanchin-Ryu, what events and classes have you attended, and a knowledge of all the basics, CBAs, and forms. If you have seen any kata's please explain what the circumstances are. Not just that, but also letters of recommendation from your sensei and the sensei of classes you've visited. Yeah it's a lot, but it's also a big advancement. Like eagle scout, most everyone respects black belts, so it's no easy task.

Last weekend was the annual retreat, but the past couple of years it hasn't been at the awesome Holiday Inn, but a now Best Western. It has a nice pool and a small game room with 1 pinball table, 1 point blank, 1 Foosball table, and some other games. Not really much, but it's something, and the draw isn't the amenities at the hotel, but the working out. This weekend we had good stuff. I learned some interesting things about how to do forms and we had some looks at katas. CGM gave us some good lectures. Throughout the day apparently I was being observed, according to my mom and grandparents, who always came to the retreat. I worked with a purple belt most of the weekend. It typically ends up being "work with one partner all weekend," mainly because we all stay in the same place and happen to be there each workout. I worked with him and taught him some things. Today I worked with a group of black belts on wan-su kata, mainly because we needed to be in groups of 3.

Now a couple of years ago they started giving the promotions at the retreat. Some of my friends from Super Camp were the first people promoted to black belt at a retreat. This year, I was one of 2 people promoted to black belt at the retreat. This year I was one of 2 people promoted at the retreat. Unfortunately, because it's a new camera, mom didn't know how to record video. We weren't able to get video of the promotion. It's a shame because CGM had some nice things to say. Oh well, we got pictures, and I'll post them when I get home and can get to the memory card. The pictures are really cool. Afterwards I had lots of people congratulating me, especially other black belts, because they know how hard it is to achieve that rank. We're a group of huggers, so I had lots of hugs from people I kind of know. It was great. Right afterwards I got the new black ghee, for black belts. It's nice.

I'm now a black belt. I wear it nice. Now I can learn katas Well this has been Pokematic, signing off, and bu-bye.

The Day Job Premier

Hey everyone, boy was today cool. It was the world premier of "The Day Job," a film written, produced, preformed, and, well everything that goes into making a movie, by students at my school. I'm in the RSO that they started, and while I didn't have a steak in making the film, I did advertise it. I changed my facebook profile picture to the poster for a month or so. I missed my giant pikachu. I also made references to it in your3minutes, but no one reads that except for 4 people in Russia. But the best thing of all was what I did with a poster. The picture speaks for it's self.
Yeah I turned my vest inside out, wore it backwards, and taped the poster to it. I walked around all day being a walking bill board. I guess I was the "poster child." I think I did some good advertising for it that way. I had some people ask about it and I told them it was tonight. Now for the actual event.

I was scheduled to do freebie give aways, but they didn't need me as it turned out. But I didn't find out until much later. I got there at about 8 pm, had to be there for freebie give aways at 8:30, was told I wasn't needed until 8:50, and the show started at 9. It was really cool. Since it was student made and the world premier, it was obvious that everyone that worked on it was going to be there. Some of the actors were in suits, and others were just dressed nice. The producer/directors, not so much. They just dressed normal, but whatever, it was there night and they could do whatever they wanted. There was a professional photographer getting all their pictures and such and were being organised into what needed to be done. Since I had nearly an hour to kill, I just followed them around, with the poster still taped to my backwards inside out safety vest. I brought a sarpee and got autographs on the poster from everyone who worked on it. I got them when there was a lull in the action or they weren't needed for a picture at that time. I even ended up in some pictures purposefully. I was in 2 pictures getting signed and in 1 by myself just showing off my dedication with the poster and all. Sorry I don't have them so I can't show them to you.

It was quite the premier. I heard the coordinator say to the producer/directors that "this is your Sundanese" referring to the film festival. There were photo ops, autographs, and an introduction by the producer/directors themselves. I know these guys from film makers club so they were happy to indulge in my autograph hounding. It also probably helped in making it more real for them. "I'm autographing a poster for the movie I made." Here's the one of a kind poster that will be worth big bucks one day.
The introduction was also cool. Just let us know some back story to the film and how it came to be. I hope someone recorded it so it can be a bonus feature on the DVD.

Now before you "click here for review," there are a few things I want to also mention. I did participate in the freebies, but not as a distributor but rather a recipient. The distributor for this movie was the Campus Activity Board, they're in charge of all the movie nights. They were the ones giving away free stuff that had their logo on it, not ours. I was going to help them out as partner, but since I wasn't needed, I got free stuff. In order to get free stuff, I had to dance. I can't dance, and especially not so when the music is slow. I'll have to see if that ends up somewhere. It was pitiful, but hey, got a free blanket out of the deal. There was also an after party, but because the movie ended at 11, was kind of far by foot, and I had a class the next morning, I was unfortunately unable to attend. I'll just have to hear stories next week at the meeting. I also don't know if I snuck in or if I was let in. Because I was going to do the give aways, basically working, I would have gotten in free. Well I didn't help out with give aways so I don't know if I was thought to be part of the creators, or if everyone just loved the advertizing I did, or because I was sceduled but since they cancled on me I still got in free, or whatever. If you're reading this guys, I will work off my $1 debt in getting this thing on netflix and hulu, plus I wrote a great review for it and will hopefully draw people to watch it and pay for it.

Hope you enjoyed and if you haven't read the movie review yet, click here. This has been Pokematic signing off and bu-bye.

I'm in engineering boot camp

Hey everyone, wow this is interesting. I'm taking an entrepreneurial engineering class and Wednesday I was assigned a problem and given a few tools to solve it. We had to use excel solver, data analysis, and then use these equations that weren't fully explained. I spent maybe 6 hours trying to figure it out, searching tutorials and online help and I couldn't figure it out. I got maybe half of it done by today, and was going to turn it in figuring "it's not the best, but some points are better than no points." I was responsible and emailed my professor saying "I need help, when can I come in?" I got an email saying to come in early before class, but I got it to late and wasn't able to make it. When I got to class I said sorry I couldn't make it, and here's the kicker, "I expected many people to have trouble, we'll be going over it in class more today and if you still don't get it you can stay after."

"So how many of you had trouble with the homework?" Most of the class raised their hands. "Want to know why you had trouble? I deliberately didn't teach you everything. This formula sheet, remember it? There's a lot of stuff on there that isn't necessary and wasn't specified what it does. Why'd I do this? Because in the field, you won't be told everything. You'll have to figure it out for yourself." By now my mind is already blown. I realized now what the rules of engagement are in this class. I'm not going to have my hand held, this is close to real. Now for the motivational speech.

"Want to know more about this assignment, this shows your priorities. You have the Internet, with all the world's information at your finger tips. If I said 'come to class an excel expert and you'll get a million dollars' you'd come to class knowing everything to know about excel. You won't be able to just say 'to hard I give up' in the field. Not unless you care about your job."

It's basically common knowledge that in boot camp for the armed services they give you crazy hard tasks to simulate situations in combat, like making you sleep deprived because that's how it'll be in the field and what not. We weren't being tested on if we could use the programs and run calculations, but rather seeing if we could figure out how to do it and give us a reality slap. Wow.

After that we were given the option to either turn in what we had done and receive 5 extra points on top of what the work done, or learn what we have to do and turn it in on Wednesday. I chose Wednesday because I got maybe half of it done if that and would rather get 9 or 10 for full work than get 2 or 3 points plus 5 equaling to 7 or 8. Besides, practice makes perfect.

Turns out that the excel apps need to be loaded off of the options menu to have them available. Well I'm still having trouble with solver. Something isn't set right. This weekend I'm going to look into it some more now that I understand but just need to see if there's something I'm missing. He demonstrated on 2007 and I have 2010. I noticed there was differences. If I don't get it by the end of the long weekend, I'll ask to come in on Tuesday when I don't have the class. Still amazing. Well this has been pokematic signing off and bu-bye.

Mass for the shut ins and fun at fox studio

Hey everyone, catholiccontriversy this time with fun at our local fox station. My home church was chosen to do mass for the shut ins to be filmed at my local fox station. This was a really cool experience. For those that can't guess, it's a televized catholic mass for those that can't get to a regular mass, hence mass for shut ins. I haven't watched it because I go to mass in the church. This was really interesting. We needed security clearence to get in. The mass was filmed on the same sound stage as the fox kitchen. We didn't get a picture there though. There were about 20 people there. Unfortunately I didn't end up on tv during comunion because the camera's were transitioning as I was taking comunion. Well if I ended up on screen, I'm wearing a yellow hawian shirt that is rather calm. It'll be on at 6 am tomarrow Sunday the 8th if you get my fox. It'll also be on EWTN but when I don't know. I also got a little tour of the studio. I got to go where the news casters are. Here are the pictures.

That may not look like much, but that's the weather patio.

That was really cool. Well until next time, this has been catholiccontriversy signing off and my god bless you.

Wow that felt weird. This is normally pokematic's gig.

Back to school, but not college

Hey everyone, confused by the title? If yes, hang tight I'll explain. I'm still on break, but not my brother and mom, they're back at school. Mom is a teacher and brother is a high school student. I had some fun going to their respective schools, especially since bro's high school is my old high school. I'll start in order of happening.

Yesterday I had to take my brother to school because I needed the car. We share the family's third car, and since my college has great public transit, I don't need the car. Well since I still have plenty of friends still in high school, and it's always fun to see your old teachers, I went in before class and said hi to all my old teachers. It was fun seeing them again. One teacher did something funny when seeing me. I presume that she had a planning period first hour since she didn't have any students. I walk in and say hi. Before looking up she had a tone of "what do you want? I'm on planning." Then she saw it was me and her tone quickly changed to "oh student that graduated and came to say hi." I left soon after first bell because I would technically need a visitor's pass to stay since I'm no longer a student. I don't think anyone would have busted me since everyone knows me and knows I wouldn't cause trouble, but I'm one to play by the rules and wouldn't want to cause a lock down for just wanting to say hi. I came back after school to pick up my brother, and say hi to friends that usually hang out in the back hallway after school for some reason. I did see my one friend who I got to know by interrupting the hugs between her and her then boyfriend. You may know him as Demi if you follow darkenoptimist's blogs. The friend I saw is not juju bee, but an ex. Well she saw me and started charging for a power hug. I braced for impact, and I wasn't expecting her to jump. She hit my chin, it hurt, but some good came of it. My neck was hurting that day, and either the pain in my chin made me forget about my neck, or she knocked it back into alignment. Either way it was fun seeing her and everyone.

Now for today. My mom teaches 5th grade and teaches science while her teaching partner teaches English. For a fun activity I came in and did egg drop lab with them to demonstrate newtons and gravity and wind resistance. I talked about this in my blog "can you drop an egg without breaking it?" But before I get to the science stuff, you need to hear about my getting kind of lost getting there. The school is right on the boarder between nice and bad, on the nice side. I've been there before when I was younger but never drove there myself. Well I get off the express way and it's really important to turn onto her street. I missed the street and drove along the service drive until it turned into a side street, and it wasn't the nice side. There were boarded windows and other rundown aspects. Lock the door. Now logic dictates "turn around and get to the street you need to turn on." I did that, but the street became a one way not the way I need before I got to the street I need. Crap! I eventually make it to the street I needed to be on by some logic and a call to Mom's school. This was interesting. I'm at an intersection in a still kind of bad area. He looks at me and kind of intimidates me. He wasn't like a big guy or otherwise scary, but I had no idea what he was going to do. He starts dancing and I'm thinking "is this some kind of war dance like Maori Warriors?" I was very careful of my body language to make sure not to do anything that might spark confrontation. I'm no racist, but I'm no fool either. I'm a white boy in a safety yellow hoodie with reflective strips and this is still inner city like. But he just felt like entertaining me I guess.

Ok so I'm at my mom's school, I come in and I need to pee. I had a Billy Madison Moment because I didn't know where the mens room was and all I could see was the boys room. Little short urinals, just like in Billy Madison. I went into my mom's room and her kids chanted "alwayse listen to your mother" to which I replied "I did and mapquest." She told her kids to do that and said I'd respond with exactly what I said. So I get there and set it up. I set up the splat mat, ladder, and put the bags of materials out. I didn't know what the kids would do. All but 3 failed on the first drop with only 2 surviving the second higher drop. One group that survived had a design very similar to mine. Another group had the cone but didn't have a stablizer so it fell on it's side and failed. I would have taken pictures but photo release and other stuff like that prevented me. Oh well. The kids had fun and so did I. I wonder what dinner conversation was like at their house tonight. Well this has been Pokematic signing of and bu-bye.

Really weird. I wrote the last paragraph but somehow it got deleted. Don't know how that happened. I retyped it from memory as best I could.

Hapy New Years. 2011 in review

Alright, 2011 down, 2012 on the horizon. Happy new years, time for a year in review. But before I get into that, let me tell you about my new years celebration. Like alwayse, I went to a party with my camping friends. There wasn't really anything special. We caught up, I was afraid I was gonna step on the little kids, played clue, played othello, and watched the ball drop. Dick Clark is getting old. God for him that he still does that and keeps kicken. Ryan Secrest looked like a younger him. That was kind of it. Now for 2011 in reviw.

Let's see, it was my senior year, and at midnight 365 days ago, I had the feeling that this year was going to be good, better than the other years after 2005, and for the most part, it was. There were ups and downs, but many ups. I'll go in order as best I can, with references to other blog entries.

Now for a big one that I didn't make a post about, anywhere. This year I officially decided that I am conservative. All the years of liberal indoctrination didn't work. I discovered what it truely meant to be conservatie this year, and now renouce all liberal bull I was taught over the years. I found Conservapedia and many great conservative and libertarian documentaries eplaining the lies of liberals. I'm a born again conservative. Well this has been pokematic, wishing for a great year, signing off and bu-bye. If you want to catch up on anything I missed, just read the other posts on the blogs. I didn't want to make just a giant list.
